21st October 2013 - In the film language test we were shown a film clip three times, the clip we were shown was from the movie The Usual Suspect. In the test we were marked on Mise-en-scene, Camera-work, Sound and Editing .
In my test I did not clearly mark what question I was doing which made it unclear for Mr Halsey to understand and mark, next time in my exam I need to use more media language which would make the questions I'm answering much clearer for me to write about and more clearer for the examiner. I also need to revise before my exam and have everything fresh in my mind ready for the exam.
Mr Halsey's Feedback: WWW: You actually make plenty of good, relevant points here but you made a critical error...
EBI: You don't clearly number/mark each question! This makes it very difficult to grade and it is vital to avoid this in the real exam.
- Next time, you needed detailed notes and then clearly numbered answers. And for at least 3 paragraphs for each question.
- Try and use more media language and make sure you answer the question that it gives.

Introduction to Film Noir
Film noir is a cinematic term used to describe Hollywood
crime dramas. The French word
"noir" translates to "black" or "dark," and film
noir describes a style of film making rather than an actual film genre. These particularly
include strong attitudes and sexual motivation. Film noir is associated with
movies from the early 1940’s to the late 1950’s. Film noir of this era is
associated with low-key black and white movies. Film noir is based on detective
and gangster movies, the scenes are usually moody, dark and dramatic. Film noir
is also a still photography style, largely informed by the movies of the same
classification. These films are usually filled with crime and dramatic stories. In film noir, lighting is used to create shadows and
give the viewer a sense that danger lurks just around the corner. Lighting is
the most important task in film noir photography. When adding dimension to
shots lighting is usually coming from the side not the front, film noir
lighting should come in from the sides. That way, it varies intensity across
the person or the object.
The movie I have chosen is Sunset Boulevard
The lighting is low-key lighting, with the lighting coming
from the side of the image. This is enhancing to the audience that she is an
important figure in the movie as all the lighting is on her. The man starring
at her face also shows her importance. The image creates a positive atmosphere
and it makes the audience want to be in her position.
Presentation :
Mr Halsey's Feedback :
WWW: Good choice & justification for music
: Parallel images spot on
: Contrapuntal images perfectly selected and funny
EBI: Contrapuntal images quiet varied (animals/love)
: More consistency on look/feel of contrapuntal images would of been good.
: Perhaps slightly more parallel images too.
What I could have done better: In my presentation I could of added more images to show the parallel side of the music. The music I had chosen was Rack City by Tyga. I believe the parallel images I had chosen related well to the piece of music. I could of chosen a consistent range of images to show the contrapuntal side of the music.
